what would be the best type of fabric to use to make reusable shopping bags?

i want to make some reusable shopping bags, but i dont know what type of fabric to use. i want them to be durable, but also easily washable, so i wasnt sure if just cotton fabric would be ok, or if i should use something else. i dont want it to be a real bulky fabric either (i know it depends on the size of the bag) but something that can fold up nicely to carry in my purse.
