How exactly does black friday shopping work?

My question is…how many of an item does a retailer typically carry? Will I be able to go in the afternoon (say, after work) and still get the item i’m after, or do i really have to be one of those nutjobs that camps out the night before?
I want that TV, but it’s not work getting trampled to death over.
